Custom product data fields for niche markets
General stores can get by with a name, a photo, a price and a short description. Niche stores cannot. A customer buying bike parts needs to know the axle standard. A customer buying tea wants the harvest year and region. A customer buying aquarium equipment checks the tank volume it is rated for. In a niche, the details are the reason people buy from a specialist instead of a marketplace.
Examples of niche-specific fields
- Spare parts: compatible models, OEM number, dimensions, thread type.
- Cosmetics: ingredients, skin type, volume, shelf life after opening.
- Food and drink: origin, allergens, storage conditions, net weight.
- Clothing and footwear: material composition, fit, size chart, care instructions.
- Electronics: power, voltage, connectors, certifications.
Where the data comes from
Specialist suppliers often have this information but deliver it in very different ways: as extra columns in Excel, as parameters in XML, sometimes only inside the description text. Generalist suppliers may not have it at all. A practical approach:
- Decide which fields matter for each category and which of them should be filterable.
- Check each supplier's price list for those fields and map them.
- Where a supplier has no data, take it from another supplier of the same product or from the manufacturer.
- Fill the remaining gaps manually for the products that sell best.
Make the fields useful in the store
- Use consistent values, so filters do not show "Cotton", "cotton" and "100% cotton" as three options.
- Put the two or three most important fields near the price, not only in the specification tab.
- Use the same fields in product feeds for marketplaces and comparison sites.
Custom fields in YfiFX
YfiFX lets you map any column or XML element from a supplier's price list to a field in your Master price list, including fields specific to your niche. Mapping is set once per supplier and reused on every import. When the same product comes from several suppliers, their data is combined under one catalog item. Missing characteristics and images can be searched for automatically, and AI can turn the collected attributes into product descriptions and SEO texts.
The fields are then exported to your store or feed together with prices and stock, so specialist details stay current without extra manual work.
