Managing the product lifecycle with automated updates

Every product in a catalog goes through the same stages: it appears at a supplier, gets added to the store, sells for a while, slows down, and eventually disappears. In a store with a few hundred products, someone can keep track of this by hand. In a catalog fed by several suppliers, products move between stages every day, and most of those moves go unnoticed unless the process is automated.

Stage 1. Introduction

A new product appears in a supplier's price list. The faster it reaches your store with complete data, the earlier it can sell, especially when the product is new to the market.

What to automate: detecting new products in supplier files, adding them with prices calculated by your rules, filling in images and attributes.

Stage 2. Growth and maturity

The product sells steadily. The main risks now are a price that no longer follows the supplier's cost and stock that does not reflect reality.

What to automate: daily price recalculation from supplier costs, stock updates from all suppliers, competitor monitoring for products that customers compare.

Stage 3. Decline

Sales slow down, suppliers stock less, a newer model appears. This is the moment to stop advertising the product and promote its successor.

What to automate: flagging products whose stock is falling across suppliers, tracking price drops in the market.

Stage 4. Withdrawal

The product disappears from supplier price lists. If the store does not notice, it keeps selling an item nobody can deliver.

What to automate: marking products as unavailable when they vanish from all sources, collecting them in a list for archiving or redirecting the page.

Why automation matters at every stage

Manual lifecycle management tends to focus on adding products and forget about the rest. The result is a catalog with outdated prices on mature products and hundreds of dead listings. Automated updates handle every stage in the same daily run.
