Testing product updates before they reach customers
Automated updates are fast in both directions: they spread correct data quickly, and they spread mistakes just as quickly. A shifted column in a supplier file, a new markup rule with a typo, a currency rate entered as 4.1 instead of 41: any of these can change thousands of prices in one run. A short testing routine catches most of these problems before customers see them.
When to test
- When you add a new supplier or change a supplier's mapping.
- When you change pricing rules or exchange rates.
- When a supplier announces a change in their file format.
- Before bulk content changes, such as new descriptions for a whole category.
- When moving to a new store platform or a new export format.
Step 1. Calculate without publishing
Run the import and recalculation, but do not export to the store yet. Review the result as a file or in the catalog view.
Step 2. Check the totals
- Is the number of products close to the previous run?
- How many products changed price, and is that number plausible?
- How many products changed from in stock to out of stock?
Large unexpected differences usually point to a structural problem rather than real changes.
Step 3. Look at the extremes
Sort products by price change in percent. The largest increases and decreases are where errors show up first: a price multiplied by ten, a price of zero, a markup applied twice.
Step 4. Spot-check samples
Pick a few products from different categories, suppliers and price ranges, and verify the result by hand: supplier cost, currency conversion, markup, final price.
Step 5. Publish to a limited scope
If possible, export a single category or a test store first, check how it looks on the site, then release the full update.
Step 6. Watch the first runs
After a change, check the results of the next two or three scheduled runs. Some problems only appear with the next file from the supplier.
Build permanent safeguards
Some checks are worth keeping on every run, not only during tests: a minimum margin that no price can fall below, protection against dumping and a review of products whose price changed by more than a set percentage.
Testing with YfiFX
In YfiFX, import, recalculation and export are separate steps, so you can process supplier data and review the Master price list before anything is sent to the store. Exports to files make it easy to compare a new result with the previous one. Minimum margins and protection against dumping in the pricing rules act as permanent guardrails for every scheduled run.
